Social anxiety or Social phobia is a type of Anxiety disorder that causes extreme fear in social context. People with this disorder have trouble talking to people, meeting new people, and attending social gatherings. They fear being judged or scrutinized by others. They may understand that their fears are irrational or unreasonable, but feel helpless to overcome them.


According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) approximately 15 million American adults are suffering from social anxiety disorder. 

Symptoms of anxiety disorder may first appear in senior secondary or college (around the age of 13). it might be linked with history of bullying, teasing, abuse. there are a lot of symptoms of social anxiety. however it is not important that all the symptoms appear in everyone. few symptoms may be appeared.  


Major physical symptoms of social anxiety:

  • Nausea
  • Excessive sweating
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness


Psychological symptoms of social anxiety:

  • Avoiding social situations 
  • Trying to blend in into background if need to attend any social event
  • Worrying intensely about social situations
  • Worrying for days or weeks before an event
  • Worrying about embarrassing himself/herself in a social situation
  • Worrying that other people will notice you are stressed or nervous
  • Needing alcohol to face a social situation
  • Missing school or work because of anxiety




How Social anxiety effects our life:

Avoiding social situations impact personal relationship which leads to :

  • Low self-esteem
  • Negative thoughts
  • Depression
  • Sensitivity to criticism
  • Poor social skills that don’t improve



How to Overcome Social Anxiety:

Face your fear: If  you are afraid of social gathering then decide to face them and gradually expose to situations that causes anxiety. it will train your brain how to react in such situations.


Engage with people :Make a conscious choice to engage with people and Seek out some socail interactions.

 

Breaths: If you feel worried, take a deep breathe and relax yourself


Focus outward: try to focus outward, on other people, rather than inward when in social situation.


Act confidently: if you act confidentially in people may react positively .


Be Kind: Be kind to yourself. Anxiety are temporary and it does not mean that you have failed.
